Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
