In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
