Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
