Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
