Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests show the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the public for tips.
An important official said the incident rendered him speechless and had to be resolved quickly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of immigrant origin in 2020.
